Which Frankincense is Best? When people ask which is preferable, Frankincense carterii or frereana/carterii, we've personally experienced good results with both, but feel more fond of frereana/carterii, which has both the immune-supportive properties of carterii and the skin-supportive aspects of frereana.
Customer Comparisons: Sarah wrote: "I mistakenly purchased the carterii CO2 oil instead of frereana/carterii, and I noticed a definite difference in performance and aroma. My skin did not respond as hoped with the CO2."
Peg wrote: "I applied the carterii on some spots on one side of my body and the frereana/carterii on the other side of my body so I could see which of these would work the best. The spots where I applied the frereana/carterii responded more quickly, so for me, I feel it is more effective."

Carterii/Sacra - antimicrobial, immune support, focus, cognition, memory, calming (Tisserand and Cantele consider Boswellia sacra a synonym, as it is either the same or very similar to carterii.)

Frankincense Oil and Cancer in Perspective by Robert Tisserand

"In addition to Ron Guba’s formulation here, there is some evidence – a single case study – that frankincense oil may be helpful in skin cancer." - Robert Tisserand comment on his article: Ron Guba on Essential Oils and Skin Cancer

Boswellia frereana (frankincense) suppresses cytokine-induced matrix metalloproteinase expression and production of pro-inflammatory molecules in articular cartilage. - PubMed Article

Frankincense oil derived from Boswellia carterii induces tumor cell specific cytotoxicity - PubMed Article
CONCLUSION: Frankincense oil appears to distinguish cancerous from normal bladder cells and suppress cancer cell viability. Microarray and bioinformatics analysis proposed multiple pathways that can be activated by frankincense oil to induce bladder cancer cell death. Frankincense oil might represent an alternative intravesical agent for bladder cancer treatment.

Immunologist Mahmoud Suhail: "Cancer starts when the DNA code within the cell's nucleus becomes corrupted. It seems Frankincense has a re-set function. It can tell the cell what the right DNA code should be. Frankincense separates the 'brain' of the cancerous cell - the nucleus - from the 'body' - the cytoplasm, and closes down the nucleus to stop it reproducing corrupted DNA codes."

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil.

Since Frankincense does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Frankincense is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French aromatherapy" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.

Kurt Schaubelt wrote in The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils (p. 133) that 1 drop orally may help with immuno deficiency and depression.
Frankincense is suitable to put a drop on the toothbrush for oral care.

1. I really like your Frankincense carterii, and it is SO affordable! I also like the Frankincense frereana, but I was used to using carterii and find it as lovely as the one from YL. It quickly takes care of the tiny sore spots I get on my nose. - Barbara

2. I have something similar to neuropathy that is limited to the top of my foot. I am a missionary in Panama and have not had a doctors diagnosis, but that's the closest thing I can come up with when Googling my symptom. The symptom is this sudden onset of a feeling like a severe stabbing sunburn without the heat sensation. It comes and goes in minute segments, and then may not flare up for several hours or sometimes hourly. I roll on a mixture of oils and use Icy Hot with lidocaine and it feels better, but it has been consistently bothersome because it's a sudden and very uncomfortable pain - like someone suddenly touching sunburned skin. This has been going on for a few months. I also have Vertigo. A few days ago I was hit with dizziness, and what always works is Frankincense on the roof of my mouth. It tastes horrible, but it's worth it! It's been a game changer for me! Frankincense on the roof of my mouth typically knocks out dizziness within 15 minutes. What unexpectedly occurred - much to my amazement - it knocked out my nerve pain in my foot. I still have flare ups, but it knocks it out completely for hours. When I was applying oils topically, I would have relief for an hour, but I could still feel something wrong. I haven't tried Frankincense topically because it has been working orally - just a drop. I am so pleasantly surprised that I just had to share ! I don't know how it works, but it's wonderful to have relief! - Libby

3. I had numerous skin growths on my body that my MD told me thought "could be cancer." I applied the carterii on the spots on one side of my body and the frereana/carterii on the other side of my body so I could see which of these would work the best. The spots where I applied the frereana/carterii changed more quickly, so for me, I feel it is more effective. - Pe

4. Frankincense really helped my son when he had a concussion. - Diane

5. Frankincense carteri has kept my dog, who was dying slowly from cancer, very much alive and has fought it back to where she is not in daily pain. She has had a miraculous turn around twice, from death bed, time to be put down then better. She's still sadly old and dying, but this has made her days tolerable, not miserable, and it has kept us from having to put her down unnecessarily. I mix several drops diluted in olive oil and slather it over her cancers several times daily. We also give her CBD for pain and stiffness. - Mimi

6. I noticed a red spot on my nose while I was caring for my elderly mother. I focused on her needs and left it untreated. After some time, my mother passed, and once things settled and I was back home, I began applying Frankincense fereana/carterii and coconut oil 2x a day, just in case it was some sort of skin cancer. I did this for 3 years. After 3 years, I saw a dermatologist who confirmed by biopsy that I had the beginning stage of squamous cell carcinoma. He recommended surgery removal. I immediately went home and made a paste with Frankincense, coconut oil and baking soda. I used this on the spot 3x a day for two months leading up to the surgery. The day of the surgery, the doctor only took one layer of skin off my nose.  He didn’t feel the need to go any deeper. He came back in the room and told me that there was NO cancer. Two months earlier when he tested the skin, it was there. I told him what I had been doing and he said that the mixture with the abrasive helped slough off the cancerous skin. I am so thankful for your oils! I am now cancer-free. - Alice

7. I like frereana/carterii for muscle and nerve issues. I like the carterii for calming/anxiety. - Rachel

8. Frankincense has helped some of my clients with uterine disorders such as fibroid cysts and other imbalances of the endocrine system. Some apply it topically, others use it diluted on an organic tampon. - Aggi

9. I applied Frankincense carterii on my son's wart - although not consistently. I was very pleasantly surprised when the wart turned dark and then disappeared. - Melissa

10. Frankincense carterii is deflating/shrinking/fading a large 60-year-old mole on my husband’s back. This little rascal (the mole, not my husband *_*) was large enough for the US government to refer to it in their official description of him for his military identification! - Fran

11. Frankincense carterii (sacra) helps me so much with the pain of plantar fasciitis. It gets a handle on the pain! I don't want to be without it. - Clara

Safety
Frankincense is considered non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing.

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
