Research and Aromatherapy Literature Notes:
Comparisons for Effectiveness of Aromatherapy and Acupressure Massage on Quality of Life in Career Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Inhaled aromatherapy blend of equal parts Lavender, Marjoram and Clary Sage essential oils significantly increased both the quality of life and sleep quality in working women.

Purchon/Cantele wrote: "Research conducted on the use of marjoram essential oil on mice with liver damage from mosquito insecticide revealed the liver-protective activity of this essential oil, suggesting that using it may be an economical way to protect humans exposed to household pesticides and their toxic effects."

Combine with Lavender, Mardarin and Roman Chamomile for a relaxing, calming spray.
4 drops Lavender
4 drops Mandarin
2 drops Roman Chamomile
2 drops Sweet Marjoram
4 oz filtered or distilled water
Combine the essential oils first in a 4 oz glass or PET plastic spray bottle, then add water to fill. Shake well before each use. (Adapted recipe from Purchon/Cantele.)

Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D wrote in The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils (p. 133) that 1 drop in water is slightly tranquilizing.

Price wrote: "Marjoram oil stimulates the vagus (parasympathetic) nerve and does not act on the sympathetic nerve, therefore its action is tranquillizing and lightly narcotic, a nervous sedative (Duraffourd 1982)."

Thyme ct linalool, Sweet Marjoram, are also helpful for calming intestinal inflammations, gastritis and colitis. - Jade Shutes, French Aromatherapy (class)

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil.

Since Sweet Marjoram does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Marjoram is suitable for internal use within safe parameters, if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.

Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D wrote in The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils (p. 133) that 1 drop orally is slightly tranquilizing.

We believe that essential oils are provided by the Lord to support our health and well-being.
The Lord is our wisdom, protector and healer.
(Genesis 1:29-30, Ezekiel 47:12)
1. HEO's Marjoram is helping my SIL who had a heart attack a year ago. She also uses Hawthorne Berry Extract by Dr. Christopher. Both have been invaluable for her. She tried Ylang Ylang, and it helped, but she gets more sustained relief from the Marjoram (applied over her heart). We prayed that the Lord would lead us to the right things, and that is the most important thing of all. I would not limit myself to thinking that she will HAVE to take any medication the rest of her life. We ask the Lord to teach us HIS WAYS to heal. He is faithful. - Ame

2. I have used PainX on my arthritic knee. It helped the pain a bit, but not a lot. I briefly tried Arctic Ice, but that did not seem to help much. Most recently I have been using plain Marjoram (with almond oil as the carrier). This has actually helped the most. It takes the pain down to about half of normal, and it feels very comforting - like a warm gentle hug on my knee. That probably sounds strange, but I don't really know how else to describe it. It just gives a comforting feeling. - Joy

3. I like to use Marjoram for nerve pain. - Diane

4. HEO's Sweet Marjoram is helping my brother-in-law who had a heart attack a year ago. He also uses Hawthorne Berry Extract by Dr. Christopher. Both have been invaluable for him. He tried Ylang Ylang, and it helped, but he gets more sustained relief from the Marjoram. I would not limit myself to thinking that I will HAVE to take any medication the rest of my life. Ask the Lord to teach you HIS WAYS to heal. He is faithful. - Ame

5. I have been battling trying to get off my blood pressure meds after having pregnancy-induced hypertension. I know that to reduce this kind of medication, it has to be gradual weaning. My son is now 5 months old. I have been using Circulation blend for over 2 months now, diluted on my wrist and heart. I was able to reduce my meds in half, and then it came to a stagnant point. I ordered Marjoram essential oil and started using it since yesterday. My numbers are so good that I didn't take my dose yesterday, and this morning I cut my meds in half again (so quarter dose), and it is reading very good. Marjoram smells so good, and I dilute it with 5 ml fractionated coconut oil and 5 drops Marjoram (5%) in a roller bottle and have been applying every hour. I hope to get off my meds completely. - Anne

6. I wanted to find more than one oil that works as well as Ylang Ylang does for my high blood pressure. I tried Marjoram at 5%, as suggested in testimony #5 above. It worked great, and I love the scent!  My blood pressure usually goes up in the evening, so I set a timer to remind me--around 6 p.m., every 2-3 hours on chest, wrists, and sometimes forearms. - Donna

10. Frankincense and Sweet Marjoram are more helpful for my bronchitis than any of the respiratory blends. I also take Boiron Chestal homeopathic cough syrup or homeopathic Spongia Tosta. I also do breathing treatments with colloidal silver in a nebulizer. - Diane

Safety
No known hazards or contraindications.

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
