Nasal Spray

The following recipes are suggestions, but proceed with caution when using and if a formula feels too strong, then dilute more. Be sure to shake the bottle well each time since the essential oil will float. We do not recommend using essential oils in a plastic spray bottle unless it is PET or HDPE, as essential oils dissolve some plastics.

Hydrogen Peroxide Nasal Spray
1 TB 3% food-grade Hydrogen Peroxide - make sure to use 3%
1 TB Saline water
DIY Saline Water: 1 tsp of unprocessed salt (such as Himalayan, Celtic or Redmond's real salt) mixed with a pint of distilled water.

Homemade Recipe
1 quart glass jar
1 quart distilled or boiled tap or bottled water; boil 15 minutes to eliminate any amoebas (not tap water)
2-3 heaping TB non-iodized salt (iodine may interfere with cilia function)
1 rounded tsp baking soda

Wash, rinse and fill jar with boiled water
Add salt and baking soda
Stir or Shake before each use
Store in refrigerator - mix a fresh batch weekly

If this mixture is too strong, reduce salt to 1-2 tsp
Xylitol can be added (for its antibacterial properties - see next recipe)

Xylitol Nasal Spray
1 cup warm distilled water (or boil water 15 minutes to eliminate amoebas (not tap water)
1/2 tsp non-iodized salt
2TB+1tsp Xylitol (has antibacterial properties)
Mix until salt and xylitol are dissolved
Use at room temperature

Testimonies
1. Confession time…I got myself addicted to Afrin nose spray. I know…I know. I was desperate. I am days away from delivering a baby, and I have 4 small children--I needed to be able to breathe!! Lung Healing, Respiratory Relief, Bacteria Top Gun, etc.…all of the usuals were "working" but not providing the immediate relief of just a couple of sprays of Afrin. I knew it was wrong, but once I got started, "just one day" turned into a week! Well, yesterday was "D-Day"--I was done! So, I followed the instructions on the Nasal Sprayer page of HEO--specifically the Hydrogen Peroxide Spray followed by the EO Nasal Spray (I used 5 drops of Eucalyptus radiata, 5 drops of Lavender and 1 drop of Peppermint--and it took my breath away!). Well, I am breathing very clearly on my own this morning. NO ISSUES!!! I will continue for a few more days and then will probably move toward a homemade saline spray, but thanks be to God for HEOs and Linda's wisdom on the website!!! - Christy

2. This is a recipe I used with good success:
1/2 oz Recipe
A few drops of a mild essential oil such as Myrtle or Lavender (my husband adds a smidgen of Peppermint, which can sting, so beware)
[HEO's comment: Hydrosols are preferred over essential oils]
1 TB water filtered and boiled 15 minutes to eliminate any amoebas (not tap water)
Shake well ~ two sprays into each nostril
Avoid blowing the nose of at least 5 minutes, and then blow very gently
