Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)

*See SAFETY information at the bottom of the page.

Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil.

Nasal Rescue has a limiting dilution parameter of 20%. We suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 20% for short-term use

Nose Drops: Kurt Schnaubelt notes that one might consider using 4 drops essential oil per 10mL base oil for nose drops (in general). This may be too strong for some, so if you feel to try drops, we'd suggest that you start with 1 drop and add more up to 4 drops until you are comfortable.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler or inhale from steaming water.

1. I have a 5-year-old son that has been waking up every morning sneezing and coughing and extremely congested for over a year. I took dairy out of his diet and that helped for a while. When that stopped working, I wasn't too keen on going through the entire restricted diet regimen to pinpoint the culprit and it dawned on me that I could just try diffusing some oils. I bought a few oils figuring I would alternate them to determine what would work best. The first one I tried was Nasal Rescue, and the next morning he didn't have any congestion (despite my cheapo old pad diffuser). So, I just kept using it until it was gone. Then I put Lung Healing in it and again, no issues in the morning. I have also tried Respiratory Relief with the same result. So . .. while I don't have an answer to the why of his congestion - you have given me resolution. He now asks for his diffuser to be beside him every night. God has truly blessed us through you - and I was thinking, that as you provide relief through the oils, you are ministering by equipping saints to be able to work for His Kingdom. - Kristin

2. I use this blend in a Neti Pot. I always use boiled then cooled water to avoid any possible issues with bad microbes in the water. I'd suggest anyone trying this start with only one drop of the blend. - Helen
1 quart glass jar
1 tsp Celtic Gray Sea Salt
1-2 drops Nasal Rescue blend
Mix so the EOs are absorbed in the salt.
1 cup boiling water.
Stir to dissolve the salt.
Shake well then add the cooled-to-room-temperature mixture to the Neti Pot.

3. I have been treated for a sinus infection every month for the last 6 months. ENT put me on 3 weeks of antibiotics and 12 days steroids. I came down with a virus at the same time. I had sinus headaches going into migraines, a drippy nose and a tremendous about of gunk going down my throat that kept me up at night gagging. I began using Warrior, Absolve and other EO's I had for sinus issues. Two weeks into the antibiotics/steroids/EO's I was not any better, and I gave up on EO's and quit using them. The next day I was considerably worse. I found my sample of Nasal Rescue and started using it in my nasal wash (old Rhinoflow). I felt improvement, so I started using it as a gargle also. That night I slept straight through with no gunk in my throat. For the nasal wash and gargle, I used 3 drops Nasal Rescue in 4 oz of water. I did the nasal wash 3 times a day and the gargle every couple of hours.  I'm currently doing the nasal wash and gargling 2 times a day. I also made a bottle up so I could spray my throat if I couldn't gargle. Nasal Rescue is a great blend that I never want to be without! - Sharon

Safety
Birch: Dermal, Inhalation and Internal Contraindications: Anticoagulant medication, major surgery, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, pregnancy, nursing, children and people with salicylate sensitivity, which may apply to people with ADD/ADHD (Tisserand/Young page 215).

Birch Internal Caution: Large doses of Birch can be toxic. 5mls of Birch is equal to approximately 21 aspirin (300 mg tablets). Large amounts taken orally can cause ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach pain and confusion. Tisserand notes that the maximum adult daily oral dose is 182mg, which would be less than .2mL. Oral Caution: GERD disease.

Tisserand writes about Wintergreen, which has the same properties as Birch:
"Wintergreen oil has some wonderful properties, but I would not like to see it used at more than 5%. No one has died from dermal [topical] application, but there have been at least three reported cases of people taking blood-thinning medication who broke out in internal bruising when they applied methyl salicylate-containing products to their skin. It enhances the blood thinning action of the drug, and blood leaks out of the blood vessels."

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
