Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D wrote in The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils (p. 133) that 1-3 drops orally may help with internal bleeding.

Aromatherapy Literature Notes:
Leung reports that Cistus has antimicrobial activities against Staphylococus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans.

Mailhebiau recommends blending with Lavender and Dalmation Sage for bedsores and a combination with Cypress and Lavender for varicose ulcers. It has been used to treat chronic skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis and is considered one of the fastest acting oils to stop bleeding from an open wound. Cistus is reported to be a benefical massage oil for lymphatic drainage. It is highly recommended by aromatherapists for oily skin, acne mature skin and wrinkles (Battaglia page 252).

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil.

Since Cistus does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Cistus is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French aromatherapy" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.

1. I use Cistus and Cypress at 0.5% dilution for facial treatments - ah, wonderful! It helps with lymph drainage and under eye puffiness. Other oils to consider for facial treatments are: Juniperberry, German and Roman Chamomile, Helichrysum and Lavender. - Margie

2. I use equal amounts of Cistus, Helichrysum and Manuka with aloe vera for a wound spray. Works amazingly well. - Linda

3. Cistus (Rock Rose) is my newly discovered, favorite oil! I find the aroma to be very emotionally balancing, uplifting and relaxing. It also greatly relieves nausea and migraine headaches. I am looking forward to using this oil in the future, as it has a wide variety of therapeutic uses. - Emily

4. The Sciatica blend [equal parts of Peppermint and Cistus] works amazingly well for about 98% of the people I see with sciatica, and the other 2% get an immediate reduction in pain. If you use an oil and don't notice a response in a minute or two, use another oil.

5. I used your Sciatica blend [equal parts of Peppermint and Cistus] for my sciatic pain, and that worked great!

6. Linda, the Sciatica blend [equal parts of Peppermint and Cistus] has really helped me with my sciatica pain and disability. Great job! - A.H.

7. I could hardly wait for the Sciatica blend [equal parts of Peppermint and Cistus] to arrive since I've only had minor relief from my adjustments. The oil arrived today, and I applied the oil and felt much better. I almost forgot about my pain entirely. I felt well enough to run errands for a couple of hours. Last week I was on bed rest for 4 days unable to sit or stand. Pregnancy hinders me from taking conventional pain medicine. Thank you Sherman family for your ministry. I am so thankful to the Lord for your work. - Vivian L.

8. I have a thoracic anterior disc that has slipped and has been causing me lots of pain. I have tried everything - oils of many kinds, Ibuprofen, and finally, narcotic pain medicine to ease the pain. Sadly, the only thing that helped was the pain medicine. However, I knew I only had a short time to use those before I became dependent on them. With prayer and Holy Spirit guidance, I loudly heard the Lord tell me to throw the pain meds away immediately. We did that last night. This morning, I woke up in pretty bad pain in-between my shoulder blades but knew that the Lord would get me through. In the mail today came my package from HEO, and in it was Peppermint and Cistus, which I used in equal parts. I decided to try that on my back and was SHOCKED! The pain stopped IMMEDIATELY! I did not expect that! I did some research on it and realized that Cistus is considered the Rose of Sharon in the Bible, and Jesus is called the Rose of Sharon!!! This was no accident! Jesus used your oil blend to heal my back pain! Praise God! Thank you so much!!! - Mindy

9. Today is one year since my surgery for an aneurysm in my splenic artery. I went to sleep thinking it was going to be a 1-hour surgery, then I would have to stay still for six hours and then I would recover at home for about two weeks. The doctor was confident. But during the surgery my aneurysm was leaking and the surgery changed to blocking off an artery to my spleen. It was a much longer surgery and I ended up staying the hospital for awhile instead of going home right away! When I saw my husband in the recovery room, he looked like he had aged 10 years. You could see how trying it was on him. He cared me in the hospital. I was in extreme pain, and the pain drugs would wear off after only minutes and I would have to wait a long time for more. He prayed over me, cared for everything I needed and lovingly listened to me moan in pain. It was a super tough day a year ago, and really the next few weeks were just as stressful. After I was released I had to go back to the ER 5 times. My spleen infarction caused more complications, but by the grace of our God, here I am, alive one year later. I found Cistus oil sitting in my oil box that I had bought and never used, but it gave me so much relief.  It helped stop my internal bleeding, it relieved the pain and it gave me peace. The bleeding slowing was noticable on the CT scans. Also, I was given fentanyl in the hospital for the pain, and it barely touched the pain, but pouring Cistus on neat took away the pain. I looked up where Cistus oil comes from and found that it was a flower commonly called the Rose of Sharron. In the Bible, the Rose of Sharron is referring to Jesus. It was a picture to me of Him carrying my burdens. It was a heavy trial to live through, but I am super grateful to be here and to care for my children and husband. Part of my spleen died, but I am grateful that my body is still functioning with a smaller spleen. God did so many miracles for me to still be here - just them finding the aneurysm was a miracle! I was told that of the people who make it through this type of surgery, 10% die in recovery, another 10% die the next day, and more after going home. I feel blessed to be here! - Katie

10. The Cistus addition to my tendon pain/ruptures EO blend has been a miracle.  I was making a blend very similar to your Freedom, so I just added a few drops of Cistus and Helichrysum to your Freedom along with a splash of Birch.  This has allowed me to sleep through the night without waking up in pain and severe cramps. I apply it twice a day to the affected areas (both gastroc/achilles tendons, both shoulder rotator cuffs, both thumb joints and both ankles) along with magnesium oil and a CBD ointment.  Everything is responding well except the thumbs, and they need more help; they are on fire and weak. - Cristi
Safety
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
