Aromatherapy Literature Notes
Elemi has been used for hundreds of years in salves for skin. It was used by a 17th century physician, J. J. Wecker, on the battle wounds of soldiers. Elemi is noted in aromatherapy literature to have anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-septic properties, and it has traditionally been used effectively for muscle and nerve pain and skin disorders such as scars, acne and wrinkles.

Elemi "eases congestion of the lungs and controls excess mucus." (Battaglia)

Elemi eases anxiety and panic issues. (Price)

Elemi has "cell-regenerating properties that benefit dry or mature skin" and it can also control heavy perspiration. (Roberta Wilson)

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. Elemi tested on 25 volunteers at 4% was neither irritating nor sensitizing (Tisserand/Young).

Since Elemi does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Elemi is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French aromatherapy" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application. Click here for information about internal usage.

We believe that essential oils are provided by the Lord to support our health and well-being.
The Lord is our wisdom, protector and healer.
(Genesis 1:29-30, Ezekiel 47:12)
1. I made a congestion rub for our six-year-old son that is very soothing and seems to help him deal with excessive mucus in his lungs. I also use this blend in a nasal inhaler for him.
1 oz unscented lotion (a carrier oil will work)
2 drops Cedarwood
2 drops Elemi
1 drop Myrrh
1 drop Frankincense

2. I have found Elemi to be helpful in balancing my menstrual cycles. I dilute 30 drops in a 1oz. spray bottle and rub it on my abdomen and breasts morning and night every day. I noticed that my flow was normalized, cramps where reduced and my breasts did not swell and hurt for days before and after my period. It also reduced my PCOS symptoms. I love the soft, dew-like smell of the Elemi oil! Another thing that has made a big difference for me, is SupremeFulvic Mineral Supplement (has to be from this company). I take an ounce daily. It helped the first month and the aids deeper healing and balance with continued use. - E.N.

3. This goat kidding season, one of my goats had a kid that was born malnourished. As a consequence, the tendons in her legs remained tight, crippling her. One leg hung down a strange angle from the joint. I didn’t have any Peppermint, so I used Elemi, as it is gentle and good for reducing inflammation. I rubbed the oil into her shoulder and all down the leg. After the third application (on the second day) my family was amazed at her progress. "What did you do to her?” they asked. “She is a different little goat." She could stand without shaking and falling to her knees. She was even taking steps on her bad leg! After two weeks you wouldn’t know she had ever been crippled. Thanks to Cod Liver oil and Elemi, the little goat is out with her sisters living a normal life! - Emily

Safety
Elemi oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing. Tisserand notes that Elemi tested on 25 volunteers at 4% was neither irritating nor sensitizing. Old or oxidized oil should be avoided, as it may cause skin sensitiziation if oxidized.

"Based purely on 0.3% methyleugenol content, we would recommend a maximum dermal use level of 6.7% for elemi oil, applying a dermal maximum of 0.02%. However, since the antitumoral activity of [+]-limonene in elemi is likely to counter any potentially hepatocarcinogenic effect of the very small amount of methlyeugenol. We therefore believe that no limit should be applied" (Tisserand/Young page 272).

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
