Vanille (Vanilla Absolute Replacement Blend)
Benzoin Resin (Styrax benzoin), Peru Balsam (Myroxylon pereirae), Vanilla Absolute (Vanilla planifolia)

This blend has a sweeter, stronger aroma and a better performance in products than true vanilla absolute and at a fraction of the cost. This is very concentrated and has no carrier oils in it.

Absolutes are solvent extracted products and considered an "essence" not an essential oil. They are produced by a multi-step process which involves first extracting the flower (or other biomass) with a non-polar solvent such as hexane. After the hexane is evaporated, a waxy product is obtained called the concrete. The concrete is then extracted using a polar solvent such as ethanol. The polarity of ethanol allows extraction of the volatile aromatics from the concrete while leaving behind the non-polar plant waxes which don't dissolve well in ethanol. Finally, the ethanol is evaporated to leave behind the absolute, which will typically have 1-5% ethanol remaining in it and sometimes a trace of hexane, depending on the method used.

NOTE: Vanille is very thick and not suitable for use in a diffuser. It is likely too thick to drop through the orifice reducer, so that will probably need to be removed. We suggest using a pipette. Click here for a choice of plastic disposable pipettes or a rubber bulb/glass pipette.

The viscosity (consistency) of some oils are just naturally thicker while most are thinner and watery-like. For example, citrus oils are very thin but root oils are thicker. From a chemistry perspective, the lighter/smaller molecules (such as those that make up citrus oils) are thinner, and heavier/larger molecules (such as those that make up root oils) are thicker.

Benzoin Liqud Resin is extremely viscous, and therefore more difficult to use. With time it may solidify. Since Benzoin is in the Vanille blend, gently warming the oil in the hands before use may help (takes patience!), or you may need to warm in a water bath.

Warm Rice Method
Depending on the size of your bottle, warm enough rice on the stovetop or for about a minute in a microwave. A cup of rice is usuallly enough; use more if you have a larger bottle. Stir the rice to distribute the heat evenly. I wrap a cloth around the aromatic bottle and set it into the warm rice. I leave it in the warm rice until the rice heats the essential oil and it becomes pourable.

Warm Water Bath
First, place the oil bottle into a bowl (a glass baby food jar is perfect) and set in a pan of warm water (or double boiler) with enough warm water to affect the temperature of the oil. Avoid any possibility of allowing the water to get into the bottle. (I put my bottle in a ziplock bag and make sure it is standing upright.) Allow it to warm for about 15-20 minutes, replacing the water as needed if it evaporates. Continue warming until you get the oil at the right consistency to work with. Different oils take varying amounts of time to liquify, and this somewhat depends also on how solid they are and their ability to soften. You may also want to use a pipette to help dispense it.

Safety:
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat—like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Flushing with water will only send the essential oil back to the eye's membranes. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. We’ve not known this to cause permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
