The Parasympathetic Nervous System / Vagus Nerve is important to activate for digestion, heart rate, reproductive system, pain, stress and so on. It supports your immune system and 'turns off' stress and inflammation. The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in your body and connects the brain to the gut. It is sometimes referred to as the "rest and digest" nerve.
Vagus nerve stimulation enhances extinction of conditioned fear and modulates plasticity in the pathway from the ventromedial prefrontal cortex to the amygdala PubMed article
"The present findings suggest that VNS promotes plasticity in the IL-BLA pathway to facilitate extinction of conditioned fear responses (CFRs)."

"There’s also evidence suggesting that other scents, like rose oil, can block the fear response to predator odors."

Regarding the vagus nerve, it is the longest nerve in our body and connects the brain to many vital organs, including the heart, gut and lungs. It is considered one of the major players in the mind-body connection, also referred to as the gut-brain axis. It influences good digestion, a balanced heart rate and breathing. The vagus nerve regulates our parasympathetic nervous system, which is the system that counters the panic mode. Research indicates that when we stimulate the vagus nerve, we can signal our body to relax and reduce stress levels, which helps us get out of the "fight or flight" mode.
Simple ways to stimulate the vagus nerve:
Singing
Laughing
Praying / Meditating
Deep, slow breathing
Exercise
Socializing
Gargling
Cold exposure

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)

Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. To support the parasympathetic nervous system, stimulate the vagus nerve by applying behind each earlobe, over the mastoid bone and/or on the base of the neck. Consider using a roll-on applicator or spray to easily apply prediluted oil. Maximum topical dilution is 10% due to Clove.

We endeavor in all things to cooperate with the Lord's design, which is amazing and intricate. We believe that essential oils are provided by Him to support our health and well-being. The Lord is our wisdom, protector and healer (Genesis 1:29-30, Ezekiel 47:12). We cast all our anxiety on Him, because He cares about us (1 Peter 5:7), and when we use essential oils, we pray that the Lord will use His oils to help us.

Children: Clove poses a skin irritation risk; use with caution on children under 2 years of age. Please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse, use with a car diffuser or as a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Fabulous blend is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application. See safety information below.

2. I use Fabulous as a hand sanitizer - it smells good. - Nona

3. Fabulous smells great! It starts out intensely fresh and then fades to sweet, with a hint of warm cocoa at the end. I am looking forward to diffusing this refreshing blend. - Emily

4. I've used Fabulous in several of the ways mentioned in the first testimony and love it! As a hair spray, I not only tame my hair but smell wonderful :) It's also "fabulous" diffused, and when people walk in, they comment on how wonderful it smells. It's refreshing, opens the sinuses and is one of my favorite uplifting blends!

5. I am really enjoying Fabulous. When I put it on my hands, I keep inhaling it, wanting more.  I've been using it the last few nights and noticed that I've been getting to sleep quicker and seem to sleep more soundly. This morning, the alarm went off and I jumped out of bed. (I surprised myself because normally I drag myself out of bed and stumble towards the bathroom....I'm not sure if it was the oil or something else, but it was certainly unusual.)  I hope that energetic, refreshed feeling will continue! I introduced it to my husband this evening; he likes it. I'm hoping it will help him sleep, too. I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much. - Teresa

6. I apply Fabulous behind the ears to assist vagus nerve balance. I find it very soothing. - Carole

7. After many years of pushing myself and not respecting my body's need for rest and quality food, I found myself shipwrecked. My sharp brain function was reduced to foggy thinking and dementia-like symptoms. My digestive system was out of whack and I spiraled into depression. My doctors offered me antidepressants, anti-anxiety and sleep meds.

A good friend suggested that I listen to the UltraMind Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman. I learned about the benefits of stimulating the vagus nerve and eating appropriately to bring my body's response to stress back into balance. This reduced inflammation and helped return my brain, digestive and immune system back to normal.

The vagus nerve is so important to health! It is the longest and most complex nerve in our bodies and regulates internal organ function. By supporting its function, you can rest and heal. I use HEO's Fabulous blend to support and stimulate my vagus nerve by applying it (diluted) behind both earlobes and the base of my neck. I find it very calming and supportive. My digestion has returned to normal, I can finally sleep peacefully again and my brain fog/dementia has lifted. Deep abdomen breathing helps as well. I have incorporated Fabulous into a room spray and hand lotion too. It and Vitality (for thyroid support) are my favorite Hopewell blends! - Dr. Chuck

8. I have been diffusing Fabulous in my car as an air freshener. It has an uplifting, almost fruity aroma, very refreshing! I love the smell! - Nina

9. Thank you very much for the Fabulous blend! I’m in love with the smell - sooo nice. I love all the benefits it has too. I never heard of the vagus nerve before, so I applied it behind my ear. Thank you again, lovely smelling blend. It makes me smile and feel blessed! - Sheri

10. I use Fabulous at 10% in a roll-on bottle, and it smells so good! I’ve been putting it behind both ear lobes. Thank you!  - Ruth

11. The Fabulous roll-on is just wonderful. I put it on my neck and temples and slept the best I had in weeks.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH.  I love the fragrance, and I love you. - Sandra

12. The Fabulous combination is really helping the autonomic nervous system dysregulation that I am having significant problems with. It’s simply miraculous that the oils can address this. I’m in a state of severe decline and worsening every week. I remain hopeful that I will survive, and in fact, have recovered years ago when in hospice care. Adding your essential oils to my kit for treatment options has been a significant blessing, as well as your company, love and prayers. I’m forever grateful for your work and study. Please know how much you are loved and are doing God’s work. Shalom and love. - Jnanda

13. I love your oils, and especially Fabulous! It seems to work for everything. I use it for headaches, but it especially helps to clear my lungs. I had pneumonia a few years ago and get congested rather often. We have a lot of fires in our surrounding area and the smoke is heavy right now, causing more lung issues, which this blend seems to help for me. - Rhonda

14. I love Fabulous and will not be without it! I have issues with my sympathetic nervous system, and all I have to do is apply Fabulous over my mastoid, and I will pop right out of it. - Lilly
Safety
Clove: Drug interaction Caution (oral): anticoagulant medication, major surgery, peptic ulcer, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders (Tisserand p. 255). Tisserand notes that "since eugenol significantly inhibits human MAO-A (Tao et al 2005), oral doses of eugenol-rich essential oils may interact with pethidine, indirect sympathomimetics, MAOIs or SSRIs." Caution is advised when Clove essential oil is ingested in conjunction with certain foods if taking MAO-inhibiting antidepressants. Those containing tyramine, which includes cheese, may precipitate a hypertensive crisis (Blackwell & Mabbitt 1965), while tryptophan-containing foods may lead to elevated serotonin levels.

Clove: Dermal Caution: Hypersensitive, diseased or damaged skin, children under 2 years of age.

Clove: Avoid orally: Individuals with clotting or bleeding disorders, major surgery, childbirth, peptic ulcer or hemophilia. Caution is advised when Clove essential oil is ingested in conjunction with certain foods if taking MAO-inhibiting antidepressants. Those containing tyramine, which includes cheese, may precipitate a hypertensive crisis (Blackwell & Mabbitt 1965), while tryptophan-containing foods may lead to elevated serotonin levels.

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your healthcare provider.
