Clostridium Difficile

Clostridium difficile defined by Mayo Clinic:
Clostridium difficile (klos-TRID-e-uhm dif-uh-SEEL), often called C. difficile or C. diff, is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Illness from C. difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long term care facilities and typically occurs after the use of antibiotic medications.

In recent years, C. difficile infections have become more frequent, more severe and more difficult to treat. Each year, tens of thousands of people in the United States get sick from C. difficile, including some otherwise healthy people who aren't hospitalized or taking antibiotics.

C. difficile infection by Mayo Clinic
Mild illness caused by C. difficile may get better if you stop taking antibiotics. Severe symptoms may require treatment with a different antibiotic.

Clostridium difficile causes gut dysbioisis, which is a totally messed up gut flora, secondary gut wall damage and probably plaque that coats the colon surface, behind which the bad bacteria can proliferate unscathed by the oral remedies used. It can be a slowly developing problem with many factors contributing to it:
fast food diet
processed food diet
steroid use
antibiotic use
Candida, which opens the door for pathogen overgrowth

Essential oils focus on the infection.
Probiotics focus on replacing normal gut flora and healing the gut wall.

Essential oils have different effects on human pathogenic and commensal bacteria in mixed faecal fermentations compared with pure cultures
Thymol (Thyme ct thymol) and Geraniol (Citronella Ceylon) suppressed C.difficile and "could be effective in suppressing pathogens in the small intestine, with no concern for beneficial commensal colonic bacteria in the distal gut."

A Health Practitioner’s Protocol for her Father:
We started with Florastor, an over-the-counter healthy bacteria that foams up, gets behind the plaque and prevents attack on the gut wall. It is strong enough to battle the aggressive bad bugs and helps tip the scale in the healthy direction. The dose is 1 - 2x daily.

1) Dad took Hopewell’s Top Gun and Defender (diluted orally) to attack the bad gut bacteria and all that may have gotten into and beyond the bloodstream. (See protocol details below.)

2) He applied Digestion Support on his abdomen every time he went to the bathroom, which was often because I had him drinking 1/2 his body weigh in ounces of water daily. He also found it helpful to occasionally put a drop on the back of his clean hand and lick it off.

3) Oils on the spine: I'd gently work essential oils up and down his spine. I’d do this daily if I could, but we did it about 3x weekly. I diluted these oils (and others if I felt to) with virgin Coconut oil:
Top Gun
Defender
Warrior
Frankincense

4) He took Florastor Probiotic at bedtime.

5) Candex is another product that we used for the chronic yeast infection.

In addition to this we focused on good things to consume:
Virgin Coconut Oil - gut healing and lowers inflammation
Kefir, organic, plain, ideally made with raw goat milk
Fermented foods - Eat a variety of fermented foods to provide a variety of strains of healthy bacteria
Absolutely no sugars; sugar feeds infection! This included grains, fruit, white potatoes, starches and so on

You have to fight C. diff very aggressively. Remember that essential oils are said to be metabolized and eliminated within an hour or two, so frequent doses are in order for big issues.

Protocol: Alternated Top Gun and Defender
First 3 days: Took 1 capsule diluted blend (2 drops EO) every 2 hours for 5 doses, alternating Top Gun and Defender.
8 hours after the last dose, took Florastor Probiotic (feeds the good bacteria in your system)

Next 3 days decreased dosage: Took 1 capsule diluted blend (2 drops EO) every 2 hours for 4 doses, alternating Top Gun and Defender.
8 hours after the last dose, take a Probiotic.

Next 3 days decrease dosage: Took 1 capsule diluted blend (2 drops EO) every 3 hours for 3 doses, alternating Top Gun and Defender.
8 hours after the last dose, took Florastor Probiotic.

Daily took 1 capsule in the morning and another in at lunch, alternating Top Gun and Defender.
Took Florastor Probiotic at bedtime.

The lab report verified that the C-diff was gone after strictly following this protocol, but we continued with the following as a life practice:
1) Weekly application of the oils on his spine
2) Daily application (alternating diluted Digestion Support, Top Gun and Defender) over abdomen
3) Florastor Probiotic at bedtime (best if taken 8 hours after last essential oil application) for life
4) Diet of fresh, organic veggies and wholesome, nourishing foods
5) Avoid sugars

An MD writes:
With continuous antibiotic use, one is very susceptible to C. Difficile infection in the colon. I've experienced the best success with Florastor Probiotic (OTC) twice a day. It will get the diarrhea in check. I recommend Top Gun and Defender via capsules to kill it, and a good Probiotic at night to fill the void left by the dying C. Diff. I have found that without the Florastor, it is very difficult to kill.

Testimonies
1. I used to have recurrent C. Diff. Antibiotics only helped until I was off of them, and then it was only a matter of time before it was back. This was a cycle, over and over again. C. Diff infection can cause a life-threatening condition called Toxic Megacolon. C. Diff is difficult to eradicate because it hides behind the mucous plaque in the colon. That's why antibiotics don't eradicate it. The antibiotic just goes down the lumen - the central channel. They don't get back behind the mucous plaque, so it's just a matter of time before it recurs. I found a probiotic, Florastor, which is an over the counter probiotic yeast that foams up and gets behind the plaque and everywhere  the C. Diff tries to hide. This probiotic eats the same food source as the C. Diff. This stresses the C. Diff and makes it vulnerable to whatever you want to kill it with. I stayed on the Florastor for awhile to make sure the C. Diff couldn't regrow. I applied Digestion Support on my abdomen every time I went to the restroom, and I took Oregano by capsule. I also avoided all forms of sugars, including grains, white potatoes and fruit that convert to sugar. With this strategy, I won the battle with C. Diff. I will ALWAYS go on Florastor at the same time as any needed antibiotic, for any and all reasons.

2. I took 4 drops Oregano, 4 drops Absolve, 4 drops Tea Tree and 2 drops Black Pepper, internally, every 2-3 hours for 2 days, for a clostridium difficile infection (intestinal bacteria super-bug) that I got from taking the antibiotic Clindamyacin. I was (and still am) also taking a probiotic with the specific strain called "S. boullardi." On the third day I reduced the amount of EO to 4 times a day, and on the 4th and 5th day I reduced the dose of EO to 3 times a day, as I was a little unsure of taking them internally (this is my first real experience with EO). I had great success! I thought it was gone, but it has returned. The doctor wants to put me on Flagyl again and I am unsure how to proceed. Is is okay to take EO orally for an extended time? I don't know if I should continue the EO dosage every 2-3 hours for 21 days (which is how long I now think it will take, after more research) and should I take the antibiotic Flagyl at the same time as the EO, or perhaps I should just try one course of action. I am so afraid to take another antibiotic (even if it's supposed to help, although there are some cases that have proven resistant to that, as well). I'm also unsure if EO taken internally that often for that long would be okay? The protocol I used is on Miracle Oils page (MRSA protocol).
HEO's Comments:
You may find that you could use a fraction of the amount you used at a time with the same results . . . and it may also help to add a carrier oil so what you do use is perhaps more bioavailable and you lesson the risk of irritating the stomach. My feeling in general is that when symptoms disappear, that doesn’t usually mean the root issue has been eliminated, so we continue our protocol for a while. With fungal issues, as a rule of thumb, we say if it took 2 months to clear the external symptoms, then continue the protocol 2 more months to deal the final blow to the internal root cause. There is nothing scientific to back this up, but it has worked :-)
My heart hears your heart, and I would also want to avoid the antibiotic. My personal feeling is using the essential oil will be far less harmful than the antibiotic, but I have nothing to back that up, and I’m not recommending this course of action. This is my personal feeling. This is how I’d approach this (personally speaking!) (Essential oils are not known to harm the beneficial gut bacteria like antibiotics do.)
Let’s turn the question around: “Will it be okay and present no harm to take Flagyl again?”  We know the answer is that Flagyl comes with a long list of potential side effects, not to mention the toll it takes on the gut, which is why you are on this hamster wheel. While it’s not traditional to take the oils orally for months on end, there are many who do and have done so with no reports of harm. There may be some who might question that we don’t know if they will cause harm. You as the user need to look at the choices and choose the path you feel is best.

Banish
Evict

HEO’s Banish blend includes the top 3 oils (Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Oregano) mentioned in the 2017 study [linked on the Banish detail page] with the addition of 4 more oils noted to help by Linda Anne Kahn with one exception: we used Manuka instead of Tea Tree because research suggests that it is more potent in fighting bacteria and fungi than Tea Tree oil, specifically Streptococcus and Pathogenic Fungi. Some research suggests that it will also be effective in fighting antibiotic resistant organisms such as MRSA. Quote from the article linked above by Cate Montana: "Certified aromatherapist, holistic health practitioner and lymphedema therapist Linda Anne Kahn uses an integrative approach to treating Lyme and chronic Lyme conditions. Kahn strongly recommends working with an experienced, certified aromatherapist. 'Internal use of essential oils through the mouth has to be done very, very cautiously," she warns. "The person administering really needs to understand what they're doing. And the dosage totally depends upon the client.'" For chronic issues, including Lyme symptoms, consider alternating the use of Evict and Banish. The advantage to alternating is like hitting the enemy from the Army (via land), Navy (via the sea) and Air Force (via air). One can alternate weekly, daily or morning, noon and night. Alternating covers more ‘bases’ and prevents habituation.
