Research, Articles and Formulas Essential oils May Cure Ear Infections The Journal of Infectious Diseases, June 2005 Applying certain essential oils to the ear canal appears to be an effective treatment for ear infections. If toxicity studies confirm the safety of (anti-bacterial) essential oil components for use in the ear, then a significant advance can be made in the treatment of ear infections. The vapours that are released by essential oils, such as oil of basil, have been shown to have rapid bacteria-killing effects. Topical therapy for ear infections is usually not recommended because most drugs are in a liquid form that cannot penetrate the eardrum to reach the infected middle ear. However, the vapours from essential oils may be able to diffuse through the eardrum and destroy the microbes present. To investigate, researchers form the Landspitali University Hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland, tested oil of basil, various essential oil components, and inactive placebo on rats with experimental ear infections. It was found that treatment with the oils cured up to 81 percent of the animals. With placebo, by contrast, cure rates did not exceed 6 percent. The team noted that, based on their properties, essential oils may be able to destroy a variety of bacteria that can cause ear infections. They also point out that essential oils are generally considered to be safe. Researchers Gain Insight Into 'Lazy Ear' " If sensory experience is degraded during these critical periods in early life, as would occur with a visual cataract or conductive hearing loss that can accompany an ear infection, the brain's representation of the sensory world can be distorted in a specific and enduring way, even after the physical deficit in the eye or ear has been corrected. " Referring to the above article, Kay Ness (ICAN Neurodevelopmentalist http://www.senc.org) wrote: This is VERY much in keeping with our experience as neurodevelopmentalists. Early ear infections and ear fluid distorts those auditory pathways to the brain and results in some not talking, hypersensitivity to certain frequencies, some so-called permanent hearing loss, etc. With appropriate sound therapy this can often be remediated but early sensory experience is IMPORTANT to baby brains. Antibiotics can actually interfere with the body’s own immune system reaction. Drops in the ear? Never drop undiluted essential oils directly into the ear! For children over 2 years of age, a 2% dilution of suitable oils may be appropriate if you are certain that the eardrum is not perforated. If the child has tubes, you will want to consult your MD before use as well.
Suitable essential oils include: Basil ct linalool, Copaiba, Geranium, Helichrysum, Lavender, Manuka, Palmarosa, Roman Chamomile, Rosalina, Tea Tree. Our Gentle Joy or Ear-B-Well blends are suitable choices. Choosing a carrier that has anti-inflammatory properties will enhance the soothing effect: Emu, Hemp, Pomegranate and St. John's Wort.
Prepare the 2% Dilution: Put 3 drops of suitable essential oils into a 5mL bottle and fill to just below the shoulder with a suitable carrier oil. For convenience, consider using a pipette. (Once the earache has passed, we suggest you store the bottle with the orifice reducer and original cap in the refrigerator for optimum shelf life.) Warm the bottle before applying: Gently warm the pre-diluted oil by securing the cap and placing the bottle in a sealed zip lock bag immersed in warm water. Application: Have the child rest on his side with the affected ear up. If using a pipette, pry out the orifice reducer and test the warmth by putting a drop on your wrist. Then put 1-2 drops into the ear opening. Cap the bottle and gently massage around the ear and down the neck area as is tolerable by the child. Place a cotton puff into the ear opening. This can be repeated 1-2 times daily or as needed.
Internal: Ear-B-Well blend is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much.Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application. Click here for more information about internal usage.
16. I just want to give a testimony on how well the Ear-B-Well blend works, I have used Ear-B-Well for my granddaughters when they complain of their ears hurting. I applied it around the ear and down the side of the neck, then I put a drop on a cotton ball and place it in the ear. Every time I have done this for them, or myself, it relieves the pain within minutes! Before long they are back up and playing. - Nina 17. My daughter was a YL purchaser, but she is now one of your biggest fans and has been ever since she started ordering. She and her family just returned from a trip to California. A day or so after they got back, their son came down with a horrific ear infection. I believe she said it was the Lavender oil and Ear-B-Well that saved them. It started working immediately. Another satisfied customer! - Chris A. 18. I have purchased oils from your company for years and Ear-B-Well has been very helpful in preventing the need for antibiotics in our family. I greatly appreciate it! - Marea 19. The Ear B Well is really something. It sure seems to be working to alleviate the vertigo and the nausea. - Fran 20. I just wanted to reach out to you all and let you know that my recent order of Ear-B-Well has been a Godsend. I suffer from severe tinnitus. My ENT and I have been going back and forth for years trying to find ways to resolve it. I was told I'd just have to get used to it and live with it. I could not accept this. I was suffering from not only the debilitating ringing, but also severe hearing loss as well as debilitating migraines and vertigo. My sister-in-law has used you all for years and after I did some research on what oils I needed, she recommended you all.I used Ear-B-Well in a roll-on applicator with Pomegranate oil, applying right around my ear, especially behind in the this up to four times a day. I'm going on about a month now and the ringing has almost completely stopped, my vertigo is minimal if none at all, I've had two migraines this month versus 3-4 a week. But the best part is I can hear. I can sit out on my porch 4 miles from the highway in the country and hear traffic. I can hear road noise from my car while driving. I just wanted to say thank you so much for doing what you do and I have passed your website on to my ENT (who happens to work for a teaching hospital). Hopefully, they will get with the program. I now have peace and can process my daily life. No more mind full of ringing. I pray that others will have just such luck as I have. - Julie
Medication/Health Condition: Contraindicated orally: Anticoagulant, Diabetes, Diuretic medication; Childbirth, Major Surgery, Peptic Ulcer, Hemophilia Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
