Eucalyptus dives

Eucalyptus dives has a high piperitone content, which is a relatively harmless ketone with a highly effective mucolytic agent for bronchitis and other respiratory issues. Kurt Schnaubelt suggests to blend it with Eucalyptus radiata "to enhance and diversify its effects." E. Dives does not have the traditional eucalyptus aroma.

Plant Origin: South Africa, ethically farmed, grown without pesticides, but not certified
Method: Steam distilled leaves
Chemical Family: Ketone (relatively harmless yet highly mucolytic component)
Aroma: Camphoraceous, slightly sweet and minty, cool

Aromatherapy Literature Notes and Research
Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD wrote that essential oils for treating the flu with "good antiviral qualities and less propensity to irritate, such as Eucalyptus radiata and Eucalyptus dives, are employed for frequent topical (rubbing) applications of the torso. Ravintsara is chosen for inhalation."
"The classic practice is to apply essential oils by rubbing them on the torso, up to 2ml (or approximately 40 to 50 drops) per session, up to five sessions per day. Essential oils especially suited for rubs to treat the flu are Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus dives, Spike Lavender and Thyme thuyanol. The effectiveness of these treatments is increased by frequent inhalation and, if fever and severity of the condition necessitate, delivering essential oils via suppositories."

In Robert Tisserand's Essential Oil Safety Masterclass (2022), Robert stated in a Q&A that he personally felt that ingesting eucalyptus capsules was very effective for respiratory issues.

Dr. Penoel recommends E. dives for sinusitis, ear infection (never put essential oil directly into the ear canal) and vaginitis.

E. dives has been found to have antifungal activity against Candida albicans. (Battaglia: Beylier MF, Givaudan SA. 1979)
Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil.

Since Eucalyptus Dives does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler (especially helpful for colds and chest infections)

Diffuse or Steam Inhalation Blend
Equal parts of Eucalyptus dives, Silver Fir and Ravintsara
Safety
Non-toxic, non-irritant (in dilution), non-sensitizing unless oxidized.

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
