Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: *Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. To avoid skin irritation, the maximum dermal use level is 3.7%.

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Cautions Dermal: Hypersensitive, diseased or damaged skin, children under two years of age. Oregano, Clove and Lemongrass can cause irritation of skin and mucus membranes if not appropriately diluted.

*Test on the skin in a small area to be sure it is not irritating. If it is, then dilute it more.

Inhalation: Diffuse

Internal: Home Run blend is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. Due to the potential skin-irritating properties of Oregano, Lemongrass, and Clove, internal use is sometimes preferred. Ideally, it is taken by capsule diluted with a suitable carrier oil (Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt). We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect to how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate the internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer them, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns, and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective when used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods; it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.

1. The Home Run essential oil treatment is amazing! I bought a 2 oz bottle from you about a month and a half ago. I am already seeing healthy nail growth. I even passed on your site information to my dad and brother, as both have the same kind of thing going on. My husband even likes the smell of the oils instead of an OTC nail lacquer treatment. I am glad I stumbled onto your website! - Jessie
[HEO Comment: Fungal issues -please see the Nail Fungus detail page for specific protocol details.]

2. It's taken a bottle over a few months, but my husband's toe fungus is getting better every day. He's been consistently putting it on twice a day. - Patti
[HEO Comment: Fungal issues -please see the Nail Fungus detail page for specific protocol details.]

3. I purchased your Home Run mixture for toenail fungus and have been applying it consistently. Recently I've noticed blisters under my nails and some puss. It's not painful. Is this normal? Has anyone else reported something similar? I use 20 drops of the Home Run blend to 1 Tablespoon of almond oil. The skin around the nail has not been affected, only under the nail. Kind of odd! I have used many treatments on this nail in the past, but none have affected it like this. - Judy
[HEO Comment: Fungal issues -please see the Nail Fungus detail page for specific protocol details.]

4. I just wanted to let you know that my daughter just told me that your Home Run blend is the only thing she has ever used that even begins to clear up nail fungus. :-) - Faith
[HEO Comment: Fungal issues -please see the Nail Fungus detail page for specific protocol details.]

5. My son was suffering from an ingrown toenail.  Last night it looked infected and very swollen.  After 15 minutes of applying Emu, Tender Tissue and Home Run, the swelling, redness and pain diminished!  Today, he came running downstairs so excited and asked for more before school.  - Leslie

6. Home Run has been particularly great for my knees as it relieves pain in both the soft tissues as well as the joint. Love it! - Fran

Safety
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your healthcare provider.

Lemongrass is considered non-toxic, but it may cause skin irritation for some because it contains Citral, which is a strong sensitizer. Avoid use on broken skin. Robert Tisserand reported at a Clinical Safety Aromatherapy conference (2013) that there is a possibility that Citral (in Lemongrass) may affect tooth and bone development in the fetus.* Tisserand's recommended dilution for topical use is 4 drops per fluid ounce (0.7%). Use caution with infants and children.

Lemongrass with Pregnancy: Tisserand suggests the use of Lemongrass to be restricted to 0.5% maximum topically during pregnancy due to citral which could affect fetal development in high topical doses. "Citral impairs reproductive performance in female rats by reducing the number of ovarian follicles (Toaff et al 1979). The effect, however, was seen only after a series of six monthly ip injections at a dose of 300 mg/kg. This is equivalent to injecting ~ 25mL of lemongrass oil into a woman's abdomen. Based on other research, we have restricted citral exposure in pregnancy" (Tisserand, page 149).

Lemongrass with Antidepressants: There are some that feel that oils high in citral should be avoided with antidepressants (specifically Bupropion) that inhibit the CYP2B6 enzyme. Tisserand states that this risk is considered "theoretical" based on the research.

Clove Drug interaction Caution (oral): anticoagulant medication, major surgery, peptic ulcer, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders (Tisserand/Young p. 255).

Tisserand notes that "since eugenol significantly inhibits human MAO-A (Tao et al 2005), oral doses of eugenol-rich essential oils may interact with pethidine, indirect sympathomimetics, MAOIs or SSRIs."

Clove Dermal Caution: Hypersensitive, diseased or damaged skin, children under 2 years of age. Maximum dermal level: 0.5% (based on 96.9% eugenol content), which is 1 drop in 7 mLs of carrier (Tisserand/Young). Repeated use can result in contact sensitization. Skin test for sensitivity.

Clove from Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand, pages 254-256:
"There are three reports of non-fatal oral poisoning from clove oil, all in children. In 1991 a 7-month-old child was given one teaspoon of clove oil. Supportive care and gastric lavage were sufficient for total recovery following the resultant severe acidosis, CNS depression and urinary abnormalities (the presence of ketones in the urine). The second case involves a near-fatal poisoning of the acetaminophen (paracetamol) type after ingestion of 5-10 ml of clove oil by a 2-year-old boy. Acidosis, deteriorating liver function, deep coma, generalized seizure and unrecordably low blood glucose were all noted. Heparin (an anticoagulant) was given due to the possible development of disseminated intravascular coagulation. The child was fully conscious by day six and eventually made a full recovery. In the final case, a 15-month-old boy developed fulminant hepatic failure after ingesting 10ml clove oil. . . . a 32-year-old woman, who self-injected an unknown quantity of clove oil intravenously, experienced acute respiratory distress due to pulmonary edema which had developed over one hour."

Oregano Oral Caution: Diabetic medication, anticoagulant medication, major surgery, peptic ulcer, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders (Tisserand page 376). Oral Lethal Dose for a Child: 21mls (Buckle)

Oregano Contraindications (all routes): Pregnancy and breastfeeding
"When Origanum vulgare oil was fed to pregnant mice for two weeks at 1,000ppm (equivalent to 150mg/kg) [about 5 drops], there was a related increase in the rate of embryonic cell death." Tisserand/Young page 376. The concern is that Oregano demonstrates embryotoxicity, and a complete absence of risk to the nursing infant is impossible to demonstrate conclusively. Keep in mind that the dose is a critical component of this toxicity, and adverse effects will only occur when the dose exceeds a certain threshold, but determining that threshold is not simple, as extrapolating from studies in pregnant animals is problematic. Specifically in regard to Oregano, 150mg (about 5 drops) of Oregano was fed to female mice for 2 weeks prior to mating. Oregano significantly increased the rate of embryonic cell death. "The negative effects seen in this study may be due to the high doses used, but we do not know what a safe dose might be . . . we have therefore contraindicated Oregano [for use during pregnancy and lactation]." Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand/Young, pages 153-155.

"An essential oil consisting of 93.9% carvacrol [the key component of Oregano] was given orally to pregnant rats during gestational days 0-15 at doses of 100, 500, or 1,000ppm. There were no signs of maternal toxicity or teratogenicity at any dose, and in the two higher dose groups there was a significant increase in the number of implantation and live fetuses, a positive outcome." - From Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand/Young, page 376.

Oregano is not on the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) avoid or use with caution list during pregnancy or nursing list.
