Aromatherapy Literature Notes
Purchon/Cantelle note that Palo Santo "is reported to be chemopreventive in liver, lung and skin cancer." They mention a recent study (without any references) that was "shown to inhibit the growth of breast tumor cells."

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)

Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. The maximum dermal use level is 3.4%.

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Palo Santo is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.
Tisserand/Young note that the maximum adult daily oral dose is 94mg, which is about 3 drops.

1. I use 5ml Palo Santo with 25ml of your fractionated Coconut Oil in a 1oz spray bottle for tick prevention. My friend used it the other day, and she didn't get ticks when others in her group did! - L.M.

2. I've finally found a solution to my yearly sinus infections. I put a drop of Palo Santo in each nostril every morning and just before going to bed, and this has eradicated my sinus issues that have plagued me for many years. - E.T.

3. Tendonitis in my elbows is eliminated almost totally when I appy a few drops of Palo Santo. - O.J.

4. We have a lovely horse that foundered a few years ago. [Founder is an inflammation of sensitive layers of tissue inside the horse's hoof.] I read online where someone applied about 5 drops of Palo Santo to the sore foot once a day, and their horse recovered in just a few days. I figured it was worth a try, and, would you believe, it worked for our "Honey." In less than a week she was walking like she had before it had ever happened. Amazing!

5. I injured by rotator cuff over 20 years ago. I have had little strength in that arm, and had to be careful raising my arm and doing things that affected it. I started using Palo Santo about 4 months ago. I apply it morning and night with the roll-on applicator, and I am getting my strength back and have had very little pain even doing things I have not done in many years. Wow!!! - F.J.

6. I inhale Palo Santo to lift my spirits. I've been challenged with depression since I lost my first son suddenly, and this is the one thing I've found that helps me consistently. I actually believe it is helping me improve and not be so fragile emotionally. - O.B.

7. I tried Palo Santo on my mole, and it worked! It dried it up and flaked off. There were black *seeds* under it, so I kept applying the EO. The seeds fell off, and more appeared - I bet there were eventually 100+ of them, but eventually (about 3 months later), there's hardly a sign of the mole; the skin looks great.

8. The other day I had a migraine and wondered what I had that I could use for it. I used a drop of Palo Santo and Frankincense with some Jojoba oil and applied it on my temples. It took a little time, but was gone!! - Bobbie

9. For several weeks I have been using Palo Santo and Geranium on my kids and dog when they go out to our tick-infested back yard (we live in PA). In the few weeks we have used them, we've not seen a single tick, and other bugs stay away too. For myself and the children, I mix up two separate roll-on applicators - one with 10 drops Palo Santo and the other with 10 drops Geranium, and I fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil. I usually apply it onto their ankles, necks, wrists and elbows. When they come inside and I can no longer smell the oils, I reapply. This seems to do the trick! Prior to using the oils, I was picking ticks off of them nearly every time they went outside. For our dog, I use a drop of each undiluted between her shoulder blades. - Satin

10. My son who has Down syndrome is 12 and is displaying aggressive behavior that seesms to have become more exaggerated and brought on more by the onset of puberty. I've been using Adagio at nights and mornings, along with Valerian at night too. Valerian has a powerful, not so pleasant smell, so we sock his feet right away or he just tucks them under his covers quickly. I deal with anxiety myself and originally bought Valerian to try on me. I found I don't mind the smell much anymore because of the calming sensation it brings on. It doesn't knock me out, but relaxes me so I can sleep, and my number one love of it is that it shuts my brain up. I can relax, without my brain still going 100 mph. With my son, who is non-verbal, I don't know what feelings he gets out of it, but he sleeps at night. He's also been calmer. I also use Palo Santo. It's very calming effect on me is craved. It doesn't have the same type of calming effect that I find Valerian does, but a different, pleasant one. I don't use it to help with sleep, but rather to calm myself or my son in the moment when anxiety may be running high (like shopping). My daughter tells me it stinks. I've come to love the smell because of the calm I associate with it. Just a few drops in our hands, breathing it in, and my son and I are relaxing better. :) - Lysh

Safety
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
