Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply topically on temples, base of neck, crown of head or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. To avoid skin irritation risk due to Melissa, the maximum topical dilution is 37%.

We suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: Suitable for children over 2 years. Please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Potential is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French aromatherapy" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.

We believe that essential oils are provided by the Lord to support our health and well-being.
The Lord is our wisdom, protector and healer.

1. I put the Peaceful blend on my son [has Trisomy 21 / Down Syndrome] every morning and night - I do think that it helps him to some extent. The other 2 oils are the Potential and Attention. My son used the Potential the day he went for neuropsych testing in April and he scored a mental age of 9 yrs. 3 mos. on the WAIS adult intelligence test. I think this proves the effectiveness of the Potential oil.  I think if it helps to any degree with comprehension, it will assist with allaying anxiety.  The Attention works with the Potential, so I would definitely use both oils together.  Beyond that I am still experimenting myself, but he definitely enjoys using the oils and he has said that they make him feel better.
The other oil I would have in my tool box is Warrior because of the many infections that kids with DS are prone to.  I have been using Warrior more and more just because it supports immunity and there is no down side to using it.  I also use Lung Support oil every evening to help with breathing at night due to mild sleep apnea. My son also likes to use the Myrtle when his nose is a little stuffy.  The more we can support health in general and the better our kids feel, I think this should provide the support necessary  to help our kids with Down syndrome hit their stride and find their way. - S.C.

2. My daughter has epilepsy. I ordered Potential and put one drop of neat (undiluted) on the back of her neck. Her teacher said it was her best day ever, and she had no seizures! I have been applying one drop on her neck every morning. We have only had three seizures in two weeks, which is a huge improvement.
[HEO's Comment: We rarely use oils at more than 25%. We suggest trying Potential diluted at 3% from a roll-on applicator.]

3. I take 3 drops of Potential in a capsule daily and have no more dips in my days. It has definitely helped my energy levels!!

4. Our daughter who has T21/Down Syndrome has a choice of several blends she can use while doing her school work. Her favorites at this time are Purpose, Potential and Peaceful. When she's struggling with an academic task, we'll stop and pray. She gets to choose which blend she'd like to use and we ask the Lord to use His oils to help her focus and learn. - Linda

5. I was feeling very exhausted and thinking perhaps I had an autoimmune disease when I read about Potential. I take 7 drops in a capsule every morning and feel energy within minutes. It's totally changed my stamina. - A. S.

6. Potential has taken my "I hate writing" daughter to being able to work on a research paper for hours. - Kelley W.

7. I started using Potential with my 10-year-old son, and in just a few days he's in a better mood and his focus is better. - Sarah

8. Vetiver on my 11-year-old son's big toe and diluted on his spine and/or brain stem work great for my son to calm his anxiety. Potential has worked well to curb his hyperactivity - just a couple drops/day of that on the back of his neck. When I do too much of either oil it seems to cause the opposite effect. Lavender has the opposite effect on my son and Cedarwood didn't do anything. He has severe ASD and epilepsy. - Sarah

9. I have an awesome testimony to share! I have a son with Aspergers, and since I discovered EO's over the summer I went ahead and started him with Potential from day 1 this school year (we started back on Aug 4). I wasn't sure if it was actually working to keep him focused, so the last week or so I have gotten slack about rubbing it on his feet before school, mainly because he's been getting dressed and putting socks and shoes on before I could get the oil on there. This morning I remembered to do it, but before school started his teacher pulled me aside and said,  "I don't know what's been going on with him this last week, but he cannot focus! At the end of today, I asked her how he did, and she said he had a much better day today!! Potential is Amazing! I won't be letting him put those socks on without it ever again! - Mitzi

10. We got samples of the Potential, Purpose and Sunshine with our last order. WOW! They have been a great blessing while dealing with the stresses of [the illness going around] quarantine. These will be new staples in this household! - Kimberly
Safety
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
