Aromatherapy Literature Notes
Purchon/Cantele note that "Sandalwood acts as a urinary system cleanser, increases the flow of urine and is antiseptic. It can be used with warm compresses and massage to ease cystitis and urethritis.

Sandalwood is noted to enhance deep sleep, is high in sesquiterpenes, which stimulate the pineal gland and limbic region of the brain (the center of emotions). The pineal gland releases melatonin, a powerful immune stimulant with antitumoral properties. The aroma is comforting and often used to soothe nervous tension, anxiety and hyperactivity.

Warm Rice Method
Depending on the size of your bottle, warm enough rice on the stovetop or for about a minute in a microwave. A cup of rice is usually enough; use more if you have a larger bottle. Stir the rice to distribute the heat evenly. I wrap a cloth around the aromatic bottle and set it into the warm rice. I leave it in the warm rice until the rice heats the essential oil and it becomes pourable.

Warm Water Bath

First, place the oil bottle into a bowl (a glass baby food jar is perfect) and set in a pan of warm water (or double boiler) with enough warm water to affect the temperature of the oil. Avoid any possibility of allowing the water to get into the bottle. (I put my bottle in a ziplock bag and make sure it is standing upright.) Allow it to warm for about 15-20 minutes, replacing the water as needed if it evaporates. Continue warming until you get the oil at the right consistency to work with. Different oils take varying amounts of time to liquify, and this somewhat depends also on how solid they are and their ability to soften. You may also want to use a pipette to help dispense.
Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. Maximum topical use is 45% (although we would rarely ever use the Sandalwood blend at over 25%). Sandalwoods blend is a thicker oil and may dispense better when slightly warmed or consider using a pipette to dispense drops.

We suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse, but keep in mind this blend is thicker than typical oils and may need a thinner oil added (such as Lemon) so it will not clog the diffuser. Consider using a personal Nasal Inhaler.

Internal: Sandalwoods Substitute Blend is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French aromatherapy" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.

(Genesis 1:29-30, Ezekiel 47:12)
1. An MRI confirmed that I don't have a pituitary gland and practically no hormones. I started using Fleabane and Sandalwoods to help with my hormone insuffciency and atrophy or death of my pituitary gland. I put a drop of each on my tongue and hold them to the roof of my mouth, and then I swallow after a while. Ten days later I'm getting eyebrows again!!! This means my thyroid may be coming back!!! Also, my vision was getting very bad, but it has come back as well!!! - N.P. [HEO's comment: We strongly suggest that oils be diluted with a carrier oil or honey when used in this manner.]

2. This is the most beautiful Sandalwood aroma I have ever experienced! I add it to my lotion and shampoo.

3. I use Sandalwoods for sleeping. It does/can cause some bizarre dreaming, but I feel that it helps me sleep better. I put a few drops of it on my wrists and rub together. I also take a few big whiffs of it before falling asleep. This is the very last thing I do before crawling in bed. - Joanne
Safety
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat—like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Flushing with water will only send the essential oil back to the eye's membranes. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. We’ve not known this to cause permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
