What is CO2?
CO2 extracted oils are high quality oils extracted using carbon dioxide in liquid form, as the solvent. Carbon dioxide is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions, but under certain conditions of low temperature and high pressure, Carbon Dioxide can be forced to become a liquid. In the liquid phase CO2 it becomes a very safe and effective solvent that allows all the desirable active constituents of a plant to be collected without the risk of heat degradation. Once the desired extraction is complete, the extraction vessel is brought back to normal atmospheric conditions, and the CO2 rapidly converts back to a gas and dissipates, leaving behind a very high-quality aromatic product that is the true, unchanged essence of the plant and completely free of solvent! CO2 Selects are obtained at lower pressures and more closely compare to the volatility of essential oils since less of the heavier waxy materials are extracted. CO2 Totals are obtained at higher pressures to get out the volatiles along with the heavier molecules and plant waxes that would not be seen in essential oils. These will typically be thicker. CO2 extracted oils are the closest representation of the natural plant ever achieved.

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. A 1-3% dilution in a carrier oil should be sufficient to be beneficial to the skin. For a one-ounce bottle, that would be 6-18 drops of Seabuckthorn essential oil. The fatty acid (palmitoleic acid) support cellular regeneration (wound healing) and helps restore skin tissue. Seabuckthorn CO2 total extract contains a high level of betacarotene which gives it a deep red-orange color. Consider adding a few drops to your formulations for a pleasing color. The essential fatty acid content of Seabuckthorn Berry is 80-95%. The major EFAs are oleic and linoleic acids.

Since Seabuckthorn does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse (with other oils) or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Seabuckthorn is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much.Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application. Click here for information about internal usage.

1. Seabuckthorn has done wonders for my roseacea and seborrheic dermatitis. My face hasn't been this smooth and evenly tonded in years! - Lori

2. I was never diagnosed with rosacea but kept getting these patches on my face that I thought were like rosacea. I used Seabuckthorn Berry and it worked wonders. I got the pustules around my chin that were so painful. I know rosacea can effect people in different ways but this oil was soothing and took it away. I think it smells good, but my husband doesn't like it. - Jessica

3. I can't believe what clean eating and using Seabuckthorn Berry with Hopewell's Unscented Cream did for my rosacea! I'm thrilled! Clean eating for 6 weeks helped the bumps to disappear, and the Seabuckthorn Berry/Cream calmed the redness in just a week. I apply 2-3 drops of Seabuckthorn Berry EO, and then I apply the unscented cream over that. Warning: It goes on orange. Eating clean for me means no sugar, bread or rice. I try to keep my carbs low but will still indulge in a little baked potato or starchy veggies every now and then. No processed foods. I DO eat quite a bit of dairy though.- Kristi

4. Seabuckthorn CO2 is the best treatment for burns! The quick relief it provides to burns is amazing and speeds up the healing process.  I thank God for His wisdom and the blessing of Hopewell Oils to our family and friends.  - Laura

Safety
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
