Research

Gastroprotective Activity of Essential Oils from Turmeric and Ginger PubMed
Results suggested that Turmeric and Ginger essential oil could reduce the gastric ulcer in rat stomach. Also, oxidative stress produced by ethanol was found to be significantly reduced. The oils apparently increased antioxidant levels as well as reduced damage done to the stomach wall. Both Ginger and Turmeric could be used in culinary preparations as a supportive measure.

Turmeric is one the most thoroughly researched plants in existence today. Its medicinal properties and components (primarily curcumin (link is external)) have been the subject of over 12,000 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies(link is external). In fact, our five-year long research project on this sacred plant(link is external) has revealed over 800 potential preventive and therapeutic applications, as well as 250 distinct beneficial physiological effects.

Iron Deficiency Anemia Due to High-Dose Turmeric

Chili, but not turmeric, inhibits iron absorption in young women from an iron-fortified composite meal
"When scientists tested turmeric and chili powder individually in a randomized, controlled clinical trial, results were quite different. Turmeric, with much higher polyphenol content than chili, could reasonably be expected to have a greater inhibitory effect (based on prior lab studies). However, results showed the opposite. Dietary intake of turmeric in supplement form (500 mg/day) did not inhibit iron absorption in women consuming iron-fortified meals, while chili powder did.

The bottom line, as researchers point out, is that it is hard to predict how any food, spice, or herbal supplement will behave based on one factor. Although the polyphenol content of any of these can inhibit iron absorption, it may not. Spices such as turmeric that contain many polyphenols are complex compounds that have equally complex effects in the body."

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil.

Since Turmeric does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:

2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: For infants and children, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Face Paste by Jeanne Rose
Make a paste with a drop of Turmeric CO2 with some drops of lemon juice and apply on the face (avoid the eyes!). Leave on until it dries.
Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Daily use definitely improves skin tone as well as helps remove blackheads.
[Caution: Turmeric may stain clothing]

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Turmeric essential oil suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils internally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French aromatherapy" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application. There is an oral caution if taking diabetes medication.

Turmeric Tonic
- Fresh milk - warm in saucepan (the amount of milk is for a mug) (Almond milk will work as well)
- 1 drop Turmeric essential oil or ½ tsp Turmeric powder - add to the preheated milk and mix until incorporated.
- Return the milk to boil for a few minutes, and then remove from the stove. - You may want to add raw Honey to taste - stir well.
- Crush 4 Peppercorns with a mortar. It is believed that the bioavailability of turmeric is increased/enhanced by black pepper. If this is for a child or someone with a chronic cough, you may want to skip the pepper.

This is especially effective to drink just before going to bed at night. Many feel that it promotes a peaceful sleep.

Those who use Turmeric in this way feel that they are able to avert a persistent cough by drinking this tonic at the onset. They feel that it boosts their immune response.
If your cough continues to worsen, you may need to consult your Health Care provider.

Turmeric Tea Blend
10 parts Turmeric
3 parts Black Pepper
2 parts Ginger

Turmeric Tea
- Fresh milk or water - warm in saucepan (the amount of milk is for a mug) (Almond milk will work as well)
- 3-6 drops Turmeric Tea essential oil blend (adjust the number of drops as desired) - add to the preheated milk and mix until incorporated.
- 1 TB Virgin Coconut Oil
- 1 TB raw Honey to taste
- Stir well and serve
*Drinking Turmeric Tea twice daily should be well-tolerated by most individuals. As a point of reference, 8 volunteers took 6 drops Turmeric orally 3 times daily (a daily total of 18 drops daily). Only one of the 8 volunteers experienced any issues, which was a rash on the torso, which resolved when he/she stopped taking it orally.

1. I'm not crazy about the taste of the Turmeric Tea, but it's not bad at all and my aching back ceased to nag me for about 5 hours after I drank my first cup of tea. By drinking 2 cups a day, I'm feeling tons better than I have in years! - L.L.

2. Praise report! I carried a heavy load while working yesterday for too long. I knew when I was doing it that I'd be sorry. At dinner, my biceps tendons near my elbows were sore, especially on the left and kept nagging at me all evening so, before bed, I mixed Lemongrass with Turmeric essential oils, diluted them with coconut oil and rubbed it in. The pain was almost gone within a few minutes and stayed gone. Just AMAZING! - Margaret

3. I have had great success with turmeric. Turmeric is fat soluble, so I dissolved it in a mixture of olive oil, butter and coconut oil. I heat that mixture to about 112 degrees F and then put one tablespoon of dried turmeric [not essential oil] into it and then shake it like crazy. I am very happy with this since it removes so much of my inflammation; it is dramatically noticeable. I take a little sip twice a day. This saves me a lot of money compared with the capsules. In fact, I never actually had any beneficial experience with turmeric/curcumin supplements. I leave my turmeric-oil mixture on the counter without refrigeration. - found online

4. I like to mix Lemongrass (2 drops) and Turmeric (1 drop) with coconut oil for muscle/tendon injuries. My daughter hit the front of her elbow on a doorknob today, and when ice failed to help, I put the mixture on and rubbed it in. Within 5 minutes her pain was down at least 50%. She was thrilled! I also love Turmeric mixed with coconut oil for my other daughter's hand eczema. It works soooo much better than the prescription hydrocortisone cream the doctor ordered. Thank you! - Margaret

5. I made up the Turmeric Tea blend and used 4 drops. It was amazing! The ache and pain in my TMJ jaw and shoulder was cut in half for about 4 hours. - Theresa

6. I appreciate your information on ingesting oils. When I turned 50 a few years ago, I believe I was showing signs of Alzheimer’s, as I had trouble completing sentences. I heard how Turmeric combined with Black Pepper helped either break up or dissolve the amyloid plaque in the brain more efficiently than turmeric alone. I began putting a few drops of each under my tongue and I was bowled over at how quickly I recovered. - Brenda [HEO's Comment: We assume this blend was appropriately diluted for use in her mouth.]

7. My husband was having trouble with word recall and I read the above testimony to him, so he wanted to try it. After about 4 weeks of taking drops of Black Pepper and Turmeric orally, I started noticing improvment, but after 6 weeks he noticed and said he felt like his word recall was much better. It is definitely, noticably improving. Our blend is 1/4 Black Pepper, 1/4 Turmeric and 1/2 fractionated Coconut oil. He takes 2 drops, twice daily. - Cheryl

8. I just wanted to report back to you how FANTASTIC Turmeric has relieved my arthritis pain. It is for sure something to remember for your clients. I’d say it worked in about 2 days. I take it all the time now. Two drops with carrier oil does the trick for me. Sometimes I need more during the day but it always takes care of my problem. Plus it is good for short-term memory loss. I love your products!  - Rebecca L.

9. Apparently turmeric can stop up to 99% iron absorption. My most recent blood test shows I am somewhat anemic. I lowered my usage to 1/2 of what I was originally using and now I will cut that in half. That brings me down to one drop per pill, which is what you have suggested. I truly, truly love the benefits of turmeric but need to not be so aggressive. I wasn’t trying to be aggressive, just not really understanding how to dilute for optimum health. - Becky

Safety
Oral Caution: Diabetes medication.

May cause skin irritation in those with sensitive skin. Use in low dilution when applying to the skin, such as in baths or massage oils.

Turmeric essential oil can stain clothing.

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.

What is CO2?
CO2 extracted oils are high quality oils extracted using carbon dioxide in liquid form, as the solvent. Carbon dioxide is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions, but under certain conditions of low temperature and high pressure, Carbon Dioxide can be forced to become a liquid. In the liquid phase CO2 it becomes a very safe and effective solvent that allows all the desirable active constituents of a plant to be collected without the risk of heat degradation. Once the desired extraction is complete, the extraction vessel is brought back to normal atmospheric conditions, and the CO2 rapidly converts back to a gas and dissipates, leaving behind a very high-quality aromatic product that is the true, unchanged essence of the plant and completely free of solvent! CO2 Selects are obtained at lower pressures and more closely compare to the volatility of essential oils since less of the heavier waxy materials are extracted. CO2 Totals are obtained at higher pressures to get out the volatiles along with the heavier molecules and plant waxes that would not be seen in essential oils. These will typically be thicker. CO2 extracted oils are the closest representation of the natural plant ever achieved.
