Cardamom, whole green

After saffron and vanilla, cardamom is one of the most expensive spices, though not prohibitively so. Cardamom comes from an evergreen tree that originally grew only in the forests of South India, where it has been used for 2,000 years. It is related to the ginger family, cardamom offers ginger's digestive assistance and can help combat heartburn and constipation. As an antispasmodic, it can even get rid of hiccups. Chewing on cardamom freshens the breath and helps pervent oral infections.

 

Whole pods have a superior ability to retain their flavor and aroma. Because of this whole pods are often preferable and you can then grind the amount needed for a recipe.
