Effects of Ylang-Ylang aroma on blood pressure and heart rate in healthy men from Journal of Excerise Rehibilitation

The present investigation showed that ylang-ylang oil may be characterized by the concept of "harmonization" rather than relaxation/sedation. Compared to an odorless placebo, ylang-ylang oil caused significant decreases in blood pressure and pulse rate as well as significant increases of subjective attentiveness and alertness. Correlational analyses revealed that the observed effects are mainly due to a subjective odor experience.
Hongratanaworakit T, Buchbauer G. (2004). Evaluation of the harmonizing effect of ylang-ylang oil on humans after inhalation. Planta Med. 70(7):632-6.

The ylang ylang oil caused a significant decrease of blood pressure and a significant increase of skin temperature. At the behavioral level, subjects in the ylang ylang oil group rated themselves more calm and more relaxed than subjects in the control group. These findings are likely to represent a relaxing effect of the ylang ylang oil and provide some evidence for the usage of the ylang ylang oil in aromatherapy such as causing a relief of depression and stress in humans.

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart):
Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. Due to potential skin sensitization issues, Tisserand/Young suggest in Essential Oil Safety note that the maximum dermal use level should be 0.8% to avoid these issues. One drop Ylang Ylang in 4mLs of carrier would be very close to 0.8%.

Children: Use with caution on children under 2 due to potential skin irritation issues. please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: Ylang Ylang is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much. Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.  Click here for more information about internal usage.

1. Ylang Ylang consistently controls my blood pressure. As an example, I took my BP and it was 146/90. I applied Ylang Ylang to my forearms. Thirty minutes later my BP was 110/60. I have to reapply every 3 hours, but this is working very well. - V.W.

2. I use Ylang Ylang with some Peaceful for my daughter at bedtime, and she is asleep within 5 minutes. It's become a joke at our house. She now tells me not to rub the oil on her until she is laying down because she knows she will go right to sleep. - Donna

3. Your Ylang Ylang oil is amazing!  I have been struggling with insomnia lately - my brain just won't shut off at night - and by rubbing some of the oil on my chest and breathing it in, I relax almost instantly and sleep deeply. Thank you! - Sue

4. I used Ylang Ylang and got a terrible headache ;-(. Drinking a couple glasses of filtered water helped it go away. Guess I may have been dehydrated! - Carla

Ylang Ylang Distillation Information
gleaned from notes written by Dr. Robert Pappas, expert essential oil chemist
Ylang Ylang is collected in fractions, from a single distillation. The distiller monitors the specific gravity of the oil as it comes off the still. The lightest oil comes off first and is collected within a narrow, specific gravity range, and this oil is called "extra" and is regarded as the finest Ylang Ylang for perfumery since it has the highest levels of the floral oxides and esters. Once the specific gravity goes higher than acceptable for "extra," the distiller then begins collecting the oil in a new container, and this next oil is called Ylang Ylang I and has a specific gravity range defining it as well. As the oil continues to come over, it gets thicker and less floral as the specific gravity increases. The next specific gravity range would correspond to Ylang Ylang II, followed finally by Ylang Ylang III, which is the least floral, most earthy smelling and heaviest fraction because it is almost all sesquiterpenes at this point and has almost no floral components left in it. Ylang III is also the least expensive grade, and each grade above it gets successively more expensive. If the producer proportionally combines all of the fractions, this is sold as the Ylang Ylang complete oil, but a true complete should really be just one collection of all the oil in a single container during the entire distillation process rather than recombining the oil. A true complete Ylang Ylang is the one most important for therapeutic use because it is the whole oil.

HEO's Ylang Ylang is a complete collection of all the oil in a single container during the entire distillation process.

Safety
Dermal Caution: Due to potential skin sensitization issues, the maximum dermal use level should be 0.8% to avoid these issues (Tisserand/Young).

Excessive use may cause nausea and headaches (Battaglia). See testimony #3 above.

Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
