Thrush Relief
Thrush is a yeast overgrowth/infection that appears as creamy, white patches inside the mouth.
Suggested Blend: Equal parts of Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia), Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oils at 0.5% in a base of Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera). To make 1 oz, add about 2 drops each of Lavender and Tea Tree to 1 oz coconut oil. See dilution chart.
Suitable for topical use and safe orally if used as suggested, as there is 0.5% essential oil in the blend and only a drop of the diluted blend is needed if applied with a clean finger. Gently apply this blend sparingly inside the child's mouth with a cotton swab or a clean finger. A nursing mother should apply to herself as well to avoid passing it back and forth.
Stephanie Fritz LM, CPM writes in Essential Oils for Pregnancy, Birth Babies, page 120, that when the baby's tongue is coated with a milk-like-substance, it is called thrush. "Your baby may even have a diaper rash that can turn very red and raw quickly. Thrush is a yeast infection, and it can spread to mom's nipple as well. You will want to treat both baby's mouth and your nipple so you avoid passing it back and forth to each other." Fritz does not mention how often to apply - this is left up to the mother, but some moms we know apply after each nursing.
Sugars and simple carbohydrates (which convert to sugar) feed infection, so it's best to adjust the diet to avoid these.
