Pinworms: Consider Fresh Garlic
We smash or finely chop a garlic clove and have the child swallow it. We did this by mixing it with something like a little mashed sweet potato or something to help it go right down. We'd have a cup of goat milk handy so they could take a drink afterwards. We'd do this twice daily for a few months. It actually became a good habit so we kept it up.
I know it is recommended that everyone in the family do this . . . but we had 8 children and there was no way we could consistently keep up for any length of time with who had taken their dose. We did keep the child in his own bed (we didn't let him slip into bed with a sibling or us) and washed the sheets in hot water and dried them in the sunshine, but the garlic took care of the visible manifestation of the worms crawling out the anus rather quickly - in a few days - so we backed off the rigid sheet washing and just maintained the garlic. It felt to us that we'd killed all the live ones, and now needed to keep the garlic going to kill all the ones that were still to hatch out.

Pinworm Life cycle:

- Ingest or inhale pinworm eggs. (Pinworms don't come from animals).

- They hatch in your small intestine.

- Pinworm larvae continue to the large intestine where they live as parasites, with their head attached to the inside wall of the bowel.

- They mate there as well, and the males die. - About two-three months later the females crawl out and lay eggs, up to ten thousand per worm (I can hardly believe someone counted!) Then the females die.

- The itching of the rectum causes the child to get the eggs on their fingers, and if ingested, the cycle continues. The eggs can also be transferred from contaminated fingers to other surfaces where they can live 2-3 weeks.

The most common symptom of pinworms is an itchy rectal area. Symptoms seem to be worse at night when the female worms are most active and crawl out of the anus to deposit their eggs. Although pinworm infections can be annoying, they rarely cause serious health problems and are usually not dangerous. Right after a bowel movement, you may be able to see the pinworms in the stool in the toilet. It can really turn the stomach to see those tiny white worms squirming. ;-/

People become infected by unknowingly ingesting microscopic pinworm eggs that can be found on contaminated hands and surfaces, such as:
bed linens
towels
clothing (especially underwear and pajamas)
toilet seats
bathroom fixtures
food
drinking glasses
eating utensils
toys
kitchen counters
desks or lunch tables at school
sandboxes

Application Suggestions (See Essential Oil Usage for more information and a Dilution Chart.)

Topical: Dilute with a carrier oilunscented lotion or unscented cream and apply on area of concern or as desired. Consider using a roll-on applicator for ease of application of prediluted oil. Tested at 12% on 25 volunteers, Turpentine oil was both non-irritant and non-sensitizing.

Since Turpentine does not have a limiting dilution parameter, we suggest that adults follow the General Guidelines found on the Dilution Chart, which is:
2-3% for daily application
Up to 25% for short-term use

Children: Avoid topical application on children under 2 years of age due to potential skin irritation. For children over 2, please follow the Dilution Chart on the Babies and Children page.

Inhalation: Diffuse or use a personal Nasal Inhaler

Internal: HEO's Turpentine is suitable for internal use within safe parameters if such use is deemed appropriate. We feel that internal use is rarely *needed* and should only be used with respect for how concentrated the oils are. HEO does not advocate internal use of essential oils without appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer, for what purpose, how much, which essential oils, safety concerns and so on. In our experience, essential oils are generally more effective used topically with proper dilution or inhaled. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D. notes that "French aromatherapy literature contains many references to using oils orally." He goes on to note that "generally 1 drop is always enough when ingesting essential oils." A potential toxicity hazard could occur when untrained people use essential oils orally and ingest too much.Keep in mind that while medical doctors or health care practitioners may prescribe essential oils for internal use, they are trained and experienced in the safe application of essential oils. It is not a matter of using "French" or "British" methods, it's a matter of experience and appropriate application.
A case of acute intoxication with turpentine at an estimated oral dose of ore than 2 mL in an 85-year-old woman was reported. On admission to hospital, she was in a coma and was not breathing. However, she made a full and rapid recovery and suffered no apparant lung damage (Troulakis et al 1997).  Click here for more information about internal usage.

1. My new favorite insect deterrent. It works for mosquitoes, gnats and flies.

2. I add just a few drops of Turpentine and Lavender to my magnesium salts, then to my hot bath water. I find it soothing to my aching muscles and relieving to my mental stress from the day. I definitely look forward to using it every evening before hitting the hay!

3. I make a sore-joint salve using 1oz Arnica infused oil, 4 drops Yarrow, 4 drops Turmeric and 4 drops Turpentine. It's very soothing.

4. I take this orally on a sugar cube for various health issues and find it especially helpful to ease candida symptoms. - Phil

5. We originally used Turpentine for achiness and chest congestion. When our horse got hoof rot, we used it for him. We put it on his hay. - Mary

6. I applied diluted Turpentine to my knees, toes, naval and under my arms. I had a very strong response. I expelled two noticiable clumps of what I suspect is Candida. - Corey

7. I'm was tickled to see that Hopewell carried Turpentine! Many people don't realize that Turpentine (pure gum spirits - not the stuff you get at Home Depot and the like) is a natural, plant-based remedy that's been used successfully for a number of health issues long before big pharma got involved and tried to squelch our testimonies about it. My ancestors used it very successfully, and so do I! I combine 2-3 drops with sugar to attract candida yeast, microbes and parasites. I've also combined it with castor oil - the jury is still out as to which I think is best. Turpentine is effective for a wide variety of health issues, including parasites, Lyme disease, digestion issues, skin problems and so on. I use it topically for joint pain, and take it internally as a general tonic. - Jared

8. For a cough, I apply castor oil with a small amount of Turpentine on the chest. Then put a warm wash rag on top. This helps loosen a cough or chest cold. - Amanda

9. As a health practitioner, I would like to applaud you for the ParaClear blend and the wise use of Turpentine in the blend. Some of my clients initially show concern when they learn Turpentine is in it, but I assure them they need to be educated with the use of 100% pure gum spirits of Turpentine such as what Hopewell carries. I have clients who have used HEO's Turpentine both topically and orally for parasite issues with only good results! ParaClear is a wonderful blend and has helped many! Press on dear friends at Hopewell! - Jena

10. I use Turpentine as a parasite cleanse. Turpentine is an old, traditional and effective remedy to rid and clear pinworms. Our family and many of our friends have used this formula for generations with good success.

Recipe to Prevent/Eliminate Pinworms for all Ages
2 TB water
2 tsp Castor oil
1 heaping tsp sugar - it is felt that the sugar draws the parasites and the Turpentine kills them
1-2 TB Turpentine
I administer the cleanse the first few days of each season:  Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter (basically, every 3 months). I give each child 1-1/2 to 2 tsp in the morning before they eat breakfast for 2 mornings in a row.

Some of our family/friends chase the Pinworm formula with a tsp. of Fletcher’s Castoria both mornings. This is a natural laxative that will help the body expel any pinworms. I’ve not used this, but I try to consume some extra fiber to help the bowels move. I can’t really say if the cleanse really works, but I've done it for years and feel like it’s been good for our family. Our children have not gotten pinworms when other families have. - Amanda

Safety:
Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas. Essential oils are both lipophilic and hydrophobic. Lipophilic means they are attracted to fat— like the membranes of your eyes and skin. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Applying a carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eyes or skin. Tisserand suggests: "With essential oils, fatty oil has been suggested as an appropriate first aid treatment, though the advantage of saline [eyewash] is that the eyes can be continually flushed, and this is less easy with fatty oil.” We are not aware of a case where essential oil in the eyes caused permanent injury or long-term discomfort, but if you feel concerned, please call your health care provider.
